Participant 18. EBIOTEC S.A., Bergondo (La Coruña), Spain
[http://www.ebiotec.com] investigates the aging mechanisms associated with a dysfunction of the immune system and the role of dietary components and their interactions with other environmental factors in age-associated changes of the immune and inflammatory responses. Research looks to reverse and/or delay the onset of these immunologic and age-related changes by appropriate dietary modifications and to determine the molecular mechanisms by which antioxidant and prooxidant nutrients modulate immune cell functions. Methods have been developed to identify which food and environmental factors are responsible of immune dysfunction, and of particular and recent interest is the use of small and natural drugs derived from marine organisms to inhibit the effects of growth factors overproduced by different human tumor cell lines, which could be used as novel therapies for a wide range of solid tumors. EBIOTEC has expertise in both basic and applied research in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Currently EBIOTEC investigates the molecular basis of molecular mechanisms involved in neurodegenerative processes and it is trying to develop new potential therapies by means of different molecular, biochemical, and immunological techniques to characterize these important pathological mechanisms. EBIOTEC has also a production plant, which is allowed to produce and sell dietary compounds for human consumption.
